Job Interviews – What NOT to do

CNN Money wrote an article about some of the dumbest job interview moves. It reminded me of a situation 10 years ago where we were recruiting a high end software developer. The job paid in the 6 figure range and included a lot of management responsibility. We had set up interviews with one of our clients and our candidate was a perfect fit.

We made travel arrangements to send this candidate to Boston and take him to the corporate office. We waited eagerly to talk to the hiring manager in the afternoon. When he called us later he informed us that the candidate was sharp and bright, but said they were less than impressed by his demeanor, specifically that he showed up in a t-shirt and blue jeans. I had advised him to wear a suit and tie to the interview, but he informed me afterwards that he thought about it and felt that his ultra casual style would allow him to be more comfortable on the flight and during the job interview. Needless to say, he didn’t get the job.
