This sample cover letter represents an individual that has spent fifteen years in law enforcement in varying capacity but is now seeking a private sector position. The formal law enforcement background that this individual possesses is key, and is justifiably included in the opening paragraph. In either a public or private sector position the objective is the same, though in the case of applying to the private security company, this cover letter can be the door opener. When pursuing a position as a police officer there are several steps that are usually taken which do not require or expect the use of a cover letter to establish pre-qualification. The cover letter then becomes an object of more formal nature used in the later review process. Do not discount, however, that this cover letter still must be carefully written and provide the tone which speaks of your interest and enthusiasm in taking on this position.
Note the format of the cover letter includes several paragraphs that 1) Defines the person's interest and immediately introduces the strongest qualifications points, 2) Discusses positive aspects of his career and work ethic followed with a highlighted portion explaining one particular successful case, and 3) the closing portion of three small paragraphs re-stating and spelling out the strong points and potential value to the company if hired.
The candidate's resume will provide all of the details, dates and specifics of the individual's background, but the cover letter is the opportunity to discuss the highlights in a more conversational letter form. For law enforcement, the cover letter may be the best opportunity to show off your greatest skills because the process of earning a position in the public sector can be so regimented and lacking of personal touch.
